Displaced Memories
Anna Wylegala
- Peter Lang GmbH, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften
- 15 Août 2019
- 9783631712443
The book is a comparative case study of collective memory in two small communities situated on two Central-European borderlands. Despite different pre-war histories, Ukrainian Zhovkva (before 1939 Polish Zólkiew) and Polish Krzyz (before 1945 German Kreuz) were to share a common fate of many European localities, destroyed and rebuilt in a completely new shape. As a result of war, and post-war ethnic cleansing and displacement, they lost almost all of their pre-war inhabitants and were repopulated by new people. Based on more than 150 oral history interviews, the book describes the process of reconstruction of social microcosm, involving the reader in a journey through the lives of real people entangled in the dramatic historical events of the 20th century.

Culture and Psychopathology
Georgi Onchev
- Peter Lang GmbH, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften
- 12 Novembre 2019
- 9783631794685
The book sets itself the ambitious task of exploring the relationship between human culture and the phenomenon of mental illness, that which has embarrassed, fascinated, and challenged educated minds throughout the centuries. Various manifestations of this phenomenon are examined in specific cultural contexts, presented with notable competence, and illustrated with memorable descriptions of clinical cases. (...) The book and its author have many merits-the capacity to present a highly specialized subject in an intelligible, absorbing, and simultaneously profound manner; respectable erudition and academic self-discipline; and the notable skill of handling different domains of knowledge, among others. The most remarkable quality, however, is the author's concern both for the reader-who is carefully led into quite unknown and still frightening territory-as well as for his protagonists, the mentally ill. All told, I believe that this book will be of interest not just to students of psychiatry, psychology, and anthropology, but also to a broader circle of readers who are excited by the wretched and admirable destiny of being human.

Polish Literature and the Holocaust (1939-1968)
Jacek Leociak, Slawomir Buryla, Dorota Krawczynska
- Peter Lang GmbH, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften
- 5 Juin 2020
- 9783631709849
Polish Literature and the Holocaust (1939-1968) scrutinizes literary and documentary testimonies produced during or after the extermination of Jews in the Second World War and rooted in that historical, political, and anthropological context. Whether someone wrote a text during or after the war influenced the nature of what was communicated. Hence, the authors divided this publication to separately cover two periods: 1939-1944/45 and 1945-1968. This publication overviews belles-lettres, personal document literature, and press publications. Almost all texts were written in the Polish language. The genre category constitutes the basic compositional criterion. The individual parts of our publication discuss poetry, narrative prose, personal document literature, and the press discourse.

The book offers a comprehensive overview of current research in Slavic linguistics from a theoretical and experimental perspective and from a variety of languages. History of Philosophy I
Michal Zvarík
- Peter Lang GmbH, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften
- 22 Avril 2016
- 9783653958584
This coursebook addresses key presocratics from Heraclitus to the sophists, who stand at the origin of philosophy as cornerstone of European spirituality. Readers might find that already at this point we encounter timeless and actual questions concerning the human condition in the world, limits of our knowledge, or the problem of adequate articulation of reality. Later thinkers did not philosophised from scratch, but criticised or were inspired by their predecessors. The coursebook thus provides an introduction to presocratic thought as an important field of our spiritual history.

Introduction to the Study of the History of Epistemology
Andrej Démuth
- Peter Lang GmbH, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften
- 15 Avril 2016
- 9783653960686
The text is structured in chronological and ideological order and presents nine basic types of the classical perception of the problem of knowledge through an analysis of the atomistic theory of perception, Platonism, Aristotle's doctrine, scepticism, rationalism, sensualism, Kant's theory, phenomenological-existential, pragmatic, and (post) analytical perceptions. The proposed work aspires to be an introduction (not a complete presentation, neither in the number of types, nor in a full interpretation) and a basis for the reader's interpretations which is reflected in the structure of the text.

Tirse Erbaysal Filibeli
- Peter Lang GmbH, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften
- 30 Mars 2020
- 9783631816059
Today, we live in a post-truth era. Creating alternative realities, and making people believe fake realities become easier. Digital platforms tend to promote dramatic, sensational and emotional content that harms democracy. This book examines different aspects of the matter: rise of populist politics, impact of digital social platforms, engagement-oriented algorithms, spread of disinformation and counter-measures like fact-checking mechanism and developing digital media literacy skills.
"Journalists, academics and civil society groups are increasingly working together to help people confront the confusion caused by the post-truth realities of digital communications, which is no longer the stuff of propaganda from the state, but comes from all sides of the internet. In this information space every fact is challenged by an alternative fact, and all of these different versions of the truth look the same online."

The Acts of the Apostles
Bartosz Adamczewski
- Peter Lang GmbH, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften
- 20 Juillet 2023
- 9783631904862
In this monograph, the author demonstrates that the Acts of the Apostles is a highly creative hypertextual reworking of the Letter to the Galatians, with over 500 strictly sequentially organized conceptual and linguistic correspondences between Acts and Galatians. This hypertextual dependence on Galatians explains numerous surprising features of Acts. Critical explanations of these features, which are offered in this monograph, ensure the reliability of the new solution to the problem of the relationship between Acts and the Pauline and post-Pauline letters.

Aleksandra Wójtowicz
- Peter Lang GmbH, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften
- 25 Juin 2024

The book proposes a new category - heterotopia of affect - which builds upon Michel Foucault's typology. The category refers to changes of the places that accumulate contents of ideological, historical, religious, and national character. The book tells the history of a very Polish edifice as well as its surrounding cultural milieu and the history-creating role of the scientific community. The author focuses on the Staszic Palace whose fate reveals how - at different times in history - it catalyzed activities in search of radical changes in the mental landscape of the Polish community.

Kant's Notion of a Transcendental Schema
Lara Scaglia
- Peter Lang GmbH, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften
- 30 Mars 2020
- 9783631821459
The main aim of this book is to provide a critical and historical inquiry into Kant's schematism chapter contained in the Critique of Pure Reason. More specifically, the book argues that Kant's schematism chapter is a necessary step within the project of the Critique. It deals with a problem of its own, one which is not the object of the previous chapters: How can categories be applied to intuitions? The author shows that the term `schema' has an interesting and long tradition of different philosophical uses that finds in the works of Kant a point of no-return. In the philosophical works written before Kant, the notion of schema did not have a specific and distinctive meaning and function of its own but was rather used in different contexts (from rhetoric to logic to psychology). After Kant, all philosophers who speak of schemata refer in one way or another back to Kant's distinctive notion, which possesses a specific, epistemic meaning. Moreover, this book aims to provide a contribution to the understanding of the relation between philosophy and the sciences. It is by means of demonstrating the importance of the schematism chapter not only within the Critique but also from a broader perspective, deriving from the fact that Kant's doctrine of schemata had an impressive influence not only on philosophers but also on psychologists.

In Search of the LSP Teacher's Competencies À la recherche des compétences des enseignants de LS
Magdalena Sowa

- 6 Avril 2020
- 9783631823200
The papers collected in this volume present multiple views on the skills required of LSP teachers and their preparation for the profession. The authors, whose experience comes from diverse educational contexts, ponder on the nature of the necessary knowledge and know-how as well as on the methods used in the professional training of the LSP teachers. The authors have undertaken to formulate a proposal, based on both empirical data and personal experience of the teachers, which would provide us with operational and effective methodological solutions to be employed while teaching language for specific purposes.
The Soul's Logical Life
Wolfgang Giegerich
- Peter Lang GmbH, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften
- 13 Mars 2020
- 9783631809426
C. G. Jung's psychology was based on an authentic notion of soul, but this notion was only intuitive, implicit, not conceptually worked out. His followers forfeit his heritage, often turning psychology either into pop psychology or into a scientific, clinical enterprise. It is the merit of James Hillman's archetypal psychology to have brought back the question of soul to psychology. But as imaginal psychology it cannot truly overcome psychology's positivistic, personalistic bias that it set out to overcome. Its «Gods» can be shown to be virtual-reality type gods because it avoids the question of Truth. Through what logically is the movement of an «absolute-negative interiorization», alchemically a «fermenting corruption», and mythologically a Dionysian dismemberment, one has to go beyond the imaginal to a notion of soul as logical life, logical movement. Only then can psychology be freed from its positivism and cease being a subdivision of anthropology, and can the notion of soul be logically released from its attachment to the notion of the human being.

Grammatical Collocations of Verbs and Prepositions
Marianna Hudcovicová
- Peter Lang GmbH, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften
- 7 Mars 2017
- 9783631703526
This book presents empirical research of grammatical collocations of the type: verb and the prepositions «of» and «to». It is based on comparisons of English and Czech sentences containing verbs and prepositions that are followed by the object. The author creates English-Czech verbal prepositional counterparts and groups on the grounds of the similar semantic, syntactic features. She identifies the features that are the same for each verb group and generalizes them. The book determines trends and tendencies for verbs when they collocate with a certain preposition.

- 9783631720318
Computerspiele wie «Dragon Age: Inquisition», «Guild Wars 2» oder «Star Wars: The Old Republic» versprechen ihrem Publikum großartige, nachgerade «epische» Inhalte.

On the Threshold of the Holocaust
Tomasz Szarota
- Peter Lang GmbH, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften
- 11 Septembre 2015
- 9783653996838
In the early months of the German occupation during WWII, many of Europe's major cities witnessed anti-Jewish riots, anti-Semitic incidents, and even pogroms carried out by the local population. Who took part in these excesses, and what was their attitude towards the Germans? Were they guided or spontaneous? What part did the Germans play in these events and how did they manipulate them for their own benefit? Delving into the source material for Warsaw, Paris, The Hague, Amsterdam, Antwerp, and Kaunas, this study is the first to take a comparative look at these questions. Looking closely at events many would like to forget, the volume describes various characters and their stories, revealing some striking similarities and telling differences, while raising tantalising questions.

The History of Medieval Philosophy
Ladislav Tkácik
- Peter Lang GmbH, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften
- 22 Avril 2016
- 9783653958669
Calling an epoch Middle Age already involves some sort of judgment. But Middle Ages represent a historic period, in which the identity was established, which was denied by the renaissance, modern world and which however is now being discovered again in its sense and beauty. It is a period in which a co-existence between faith and intellect, between ecclesiastical and profane culture was possible. It was a varied living space in which philosophy, mystique and practice could exist side by side. It is a world which is lost today and which we can get a hold of again only by intellectual appropriation.

Gustav Mahler's Mental World
Constantin Floros
- Peter Lang GmbH, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften
- 16 Novembre 2016
- 9783631697894
With his extensive three-volume investigation, the author has newly drawn the image of Gustav Mahler for our time. Should Mahler's symphonies really be categorized as «absolute music»? - Little-known manuscript sources contain significant hints to the contrary: programmatic titles and catchwords or phrases, mottos, literary allusions, associations, sighs, exclamations. Mahler fully understood his symphonies as «erlebte Musik», music of experience, as autobiography in notes, and as expressions of his «weltanschauung». All the symphonies, including the purely instrumental ones, can be traced back to programs that Mahler originally made public, but suppressed later on. A knowledge of the programmatic ideas provides access to a hitherto barely sensed interior metaphysical world that is of crucial importance for an adequate interpretation of the works. This first volume uncovers the complexity of relations between Mahler's wide-ranging reading and education, his aesthetics and his symphonic creation.
About the German edition of this book:
«One of the most thoroughgoing and comprehensive investigations of Gustav Mahler's work and world to date.»
(Norddeutscher Rundfunk)
«The way in which Mahler's literary background, his education, and his aesthetic and philosophical maxims are presented here indeed opens up a new approach.»

On the History of Rock Music
Yvetta Kajanová
- Peter Lang GmbH, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften
- 10 Septembre 2014
- 9783653979206
On the History of Rock Music follows the development of rock music from its origins up to the present time. It focuses on the relationship between the sound, improvisations and rhythms in particular styles, and gives specific attention to the development of rhythm. The beat-offbeat principle, polyrhythms and polymetrics are fundamental to rock rhythm patterns, which serve as archetypes for specific rhythms. An archetype is a prototype, a model, or an innate experience of a species. Using more than 250 score examples, the author identifies the characteristic rhythmic patterns in rock styles, ranging from rock and roll, hard rock and punk rock to alternative rock, indie rock and grind core.
