Adherens Junctions: from Molecular Mechanisms to Tissue Development and Disease
Tony Harris
- Springer
- 7 Juin 2012
- 9789400741867
Cell-cell adhesion is fundamental for the development and homeostasis of animal tissues and organs. Adherens junctions (AJs) are the best understood cell-cell adhesion complexes. In this volume, a group of internationally recognized experts reviews AJ biology over a wide range of organization; from atoms to molecules, to protein complexes, molecular networks, cells, tissues, and overall animal development. AJs have also been an integral part of animal evolution, and play central roles in cancer development, pathogen infection and other diseases. This book addresses major questions encompassing AJ biology.
o How did AJs evolve?
o How do cadherins and catenins interact to assemble AJs and mediate adhesion?
o How do AJs interface with other cellular machinery to couple adhesion with the whole cell?
o How do AJs affect cell behaviour and multicellular development?
o How can abnormal AJ activity lead to disease? -

Corpus Linguistics in Language Teaching
Tony Harris, Maria Moreno Jaen
- Peter Lang AG, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften
- 3 Mars 2011
- 9783035101669
Derived from the successful International Seminar on Corpus Linguistics, New Trends in Language Teaching and Translation Studies: In Honour of John Sinclair (Granada, September 2008), organised by the research groups ADELEX (Assessing and Developing Lexical Competence) and ECPC (European Comparable and Parallel Corpora), seven contributions from well-known scholars in the field focus their attention on recent advances made in Corpus Linguistics in Language Teaching. The first four chapters deal with more practical issues of applying corpora to language learning and teaching, examining particularly the integration of data-driven learning and different types of corpora including pedagogical, spoken multimedia and parallel. The last three chapters are concerned more with corpus-based research for language teaching arguing for more refined statistical methodology, comparing conversational features of the British National Corpus with a micro-corpus of movies and forwarding the case for research into corpus-based, meaning-oriented multimodal annotation, respectively. This volume is homage to John Sinclair's academic legacy and the groundbreaking work which continues to honour his name.

The Emergent Manager
Tony J. Watson, Pauline Harris
- SAGE Publications Ltd
- 21 Juillet 1999
- 9781446237922
The Emergent Manager examines the process of becoming a manager within organizations and considers how people relate the ways in which they 'manage' their lives to their development as managers in the workplace.
At the heart of the book is the idea of the individual engaged in a continual process of 'becoming'. Focusing on the reported experiences of managers, the book is richly illustrated throughout with examples drawn from a variety of workplaces, including the civil service, academia, the retail industry, construction and engineering, banking and the prison service.
Tony Watson and Pauline Harris together provide a new understanding of the nature of the management role and the ways in which people make sense of their lives as managers.
Accessible and innovative, this book will be of interest to students and academics in management and organization studies as well as practising managers.
